How to treat and prevent closet mold on cold wall?« Back to Previous Page

Our bedroom closet on the outside wall has a persistent damp smell, especially since the weather got more humid. I pulled out some winter shoes stored at the back and found a few of them covered in fuzzy black spots, and the wall itself feels a bit cold and moist to the touch. We run the AC constantly but it doesn't seem to help this specific spot. What's the best way to treat this and prevent it from coming back for good?

The fuzzy black spots are likely mold growth caused by condensation forming on the cold external wall, a very common issue in Dubai due to the high humidity and constant AC use creating a temperature differential.

First, address the active growth. For a small area, a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold cleaner can be effective. Wear a mask and gloves, wipe the wall and affected shoes, and allow everything to dry completely in the sun. Discard any porous items like cardboard boxes that are contaminated. Simply painting over it will not solve the problem.

To prevent recurrence, you must manage the moisture. Improve air circulation in the closet by leaving the door ajar periodically or installing a small battery-operated vent fan. Ensure stored items are completely dry and avoid packing them tightly against the wall. Consider having a professional assess the wall's insulation, as poor insulation is often the root cause of this condensation.

For a persistent or large-scale problem, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the exact mold species and the extent of the issue, as some types require specific remediation protocols. They can also use thermal imaging to pinpoint the exact cold spots and moisture sources. This is the most reliable way to ensure it does not return.
