How to treat and prevent damp mold behind wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind our bedroom wardrobe has these black speckles and the whole room feels damp, especially in the mornings. We're in an older building in Jumeirah and I think it really kicked off after the heavy dew and humidity last month. I've wiped it down with vinegar but it just comes back. What is the most effective way to treat this and what can I do to stop the moisture from building up in the first place?

The black speckles returning after vinegar treatment indicate active growth, and the damp feeling points to a persistent moisture source. In Dubai's climate, this is often condensation from temperature differences between air-conditioned rooms and humid exterior walls, especially in older Jumeirah buildings with less insulation.
The most effective treatment starts with moving the wardrobe to fully expose the wall. For surface mold on non-porous paint, scrubbing with a detergent solution can remove it. However, if the mold has penetrated the plasterboard or is widespread, the affected section of drywall likely needs to be cut out and replaced by a professional remediation team to properly address the root colony. Stopping the moisture is critical to prevent recurrence. Ensure your AC is running consistently to manage humidity; indoor levels should be kept below 60%. Increase air circulation behind the furniture by leaving a gap between the wardrobe and the wall. A dehumidifier in the room, particularly during more humid periods, can help significantly. For a lasting solution, have a professional assess the wall for possible insulation issues or hidden leaks, which are common triggers in this region. |
