How to treat and prevent damp mold in Bur Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom feels damp and cold to the touch, and we’ve started seeing these black speckles in the corner near the ceiling. We’re in an older building in Bur Dubai and this seems to have gotten worse since the humidity kicked in last month. What’s the best way to treat this ourselves to stop it from spreading, and how can we stop the dampness from coming back for good?

That damp cold wall and black speckles are classic signs of condensation mould, very common in older Bur Dubai buildings during humid months. The wall is likely an exterior one, colder than the room's dew point, causing moisture from the air to condense on it behind the furniture.
For immediate treatment, move the wardrobe away from the wall to allow air circulation. Wipe the mould off with a microfiber cloth dampened with a diluted white vinegar or detergent solution—never use bleach, as it can worsen indoor air quality. Wear an N95 mask and gloves during cleaning. This is a temporary fix for surface growth you can see. To prevent it from returning, you must address the condensation source. A dehumidifier in the room can help, but the core issue is the temperature differential. Ensure your AC is running consistently to maintain stable humidity levels, even when you're out. Consider adding a smart AC controller to manage this automatically. Improving room ventilation is also key. However, if the dampness feels persistent or the mould returns quickly, the issue may be more serious. It could be a hidden plumbing leak or, in some older buildings, rising damp from a compromised damp-proof course. In these cases, a professional inspection with a thermal imaging camera and moisture meter is needed to identify the exact moisture source before any remediation can be successful. |
