How to treat and prevent mold from AC in Jumeirah?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a strange black speckling behind our bedroom wardrobe on the wall. We're in a villa in Jumeirah and I'm worried the humidity from the AC is causing it, especially with the recent weather. What's the best way to treat this existing mold and, more importantly, how can I stop it from coming back for good?

The black speckling is likely condensation-related mold, common in Jumeirah villas due to high humidity and constant AC use. The wall behind the wardrobe is a cold spot where moisture condenses, creating a perfect environment for growth.
First, address the existing mold. For a small patch, wearing a mask and gloves, clean it with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold cleaner. Never use bleach, as it only removes the color and can worsen the problem by adding moisture. Properly dispose of any cleaning materials. However, if the area is larger than one square meter or you suspect it's inside the wall, a professional inspection is strongly advised to assess the full extent. To stop it from returning, you must control the humidity and eliminate the cold surface. Move the wardrobe at least two inches away from the wall to drastically improve air circulation. Ensure your AC unit is serviced and its drain lines are clear to prevent excess humidity. Using a dehumidifier in the room, especially during the more humid winter months, can help maintain an indoor humidity level below 60%, which inhibits mold growth. For a definitive diagnosis of the mold type and to verify the source of moisture, a lab test can provide the specific data needed for a targeted, permanent solution. |
