How to treat and prevent mold in a Dubai villa bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa always feels damp, especially on the lower part of the walls behind the furniture. I just moved a heavy wardrobe that's been there for a year and was horrified to find a patch of black speckles on the wall. We run the AC constantly, but the room never feels truly dry. What's the most effective way to treat this existing mold and what can we do to stop it from coming back for good?

That black speckling is a classic sign of a condensation and humidity issue, very common in Dubai bedrooms with constant AC use and furniture pressed against exterior walls.
For the existing mold, start with personal protection: wear an N95 mask and gloves. For a small patch, a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover can be effective. Scrub the area thoroughly. However, if the mold has penetrated the paint or drywall, the affected section of wall may need to be cut out and replaced to truly remove the root structure. Given its location behind furniture and the persistent damp feeling, a professional inspection is highly recommended to assess the full extent and identify the exact species, as some types require specific remediation protocols. To prevent recurrence, you must address the source of moisture. Your AC, while running constantly, may not be set correctly. Ensure it is on a "dry" or "dehumidify" mode and that the temperature setting is cold enough to properly condense moisture from the air. The most critical step is to immediately improve air circulation. Move all large furniture at least two to three inches away from the walls. This allows air from the AC vent to flow behind them and prevents cold walls from condensing ambient humidity, which is what causes that damp feeling and mould growth. Consider using a standalone dehumidifier in the room, especially during the more humid winter months. Finally, inspect the bedroom's AC unit; a faulty drain line or clogged drip pan could be contributing excess moisture to the room. |
