How to treat and prevent mold in a humid bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the black spots I just found behind our bedroom dresser. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this, probably because the dresser was pushed right up against the wall in our Marina apartment. I’m really worried about their health and don’t want this to come back after I clean it. What’s the most effective way to treat the mold and prevent it from growing back in our humid bedroom?

Black mold in a humid bedroom is often triggered by condensation from AC units and the high ambient humidity in Dubai, especially in areas like Marina with less airflow. The dresser against the wall created a perfect microclimate for it to grow by trapping moisture. For your children's health, identifying and controlling the source is the priority.

First, confirm it's mold. While often dark, color alone isn't a reliable indicator; a professional inspection with lab analysis is the only way to identify the species and assess the risk accurately, which is recommended given the health symptoms.

To treat the immediate area, wear a mask and gloves. A solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) can be effective on non-porous surfaces. Scrub the area thoroughly and allow it to dry completely. However, this only addresses the visible growth, not the underlying moisture problem.

Preventing recurrence is key. Move the dresser at least two inches away from the wall to allow air circulation. Wipe down any condensation that forms on walls or windows, a common issue in climate-controlled apartments. Use a dehumidifier in the room, especially during the more humid months, to maintain humidity levels below 60%. Ensure your AC unit is serviced regularly; a clogged drain line or dirty filter can contribute significantly to indoor moisture. Ultimately, the most effective long-term solution is to find and fix the source of the moisture, which may require a professional assessment to diagnose properly.
