How to treat and prevent mold in a seaside closet?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in our Jumeirah apartment has started to get a weird, damp smell, especially on the outer wall that faces the sea. I pulled out a stack of winter sweaters yesterday and found a few with small black speckles on them. I’m worried it’s the start of mold, probably from the constant humidity. What’s the best way to treat this and prevent it from coming back for good?

First, remove all affected items and clean any visible mold from the closet walls and shelves with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning product. For the sweaters, dry cleaning is the most effective method to kill mold spores and remove the stains without damaging the fabric.

The damp smell on an outer wall in a seaside apartment like Jumeirah strongly suggests condensation is forming due to the temperature difference between the air-conditioned interior and the humid exterior air. This constant moisture source is feeding the mold growth. To prevent its return, you must address this humidity. Improve air circulation inside the closet by not overpacking it and by using a small, battery-operated dehumidifier or moisture absorber like silica gel packets. Leave the closet door ajar periodically. For a more permanent solution, have the building's FM check the insulation on that exterior wall, as inadequate insulation is a common cause of condensation in Dubai's climate.

If the smell persists or you see mold returning quickly, a professional inspection is recommended. They can use a moisture meter to pinpoint the exact condensation levels within the wall cavity and recommend targeted remediation, which may be necessary to solve a recurring problem. In many cases, improving the room's overall ventilation by running the AC consistently, even at a higher temperature, helps maintain low humidity levels and prevents condensation.
