How to treat and prevent mold in Dubai home?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past few weeks, and I just found a bunch of black spots behind their bedroom wardrobe, which is on an exterior wall. We live in an older building in Jumeirah and I'm really worried this mold is causing their allergies to go crazy. What’s the best way to get this properly treated and make sure it doesn't come back?

Your situation is very common in Dubai, especially in older buildings near the coast where humidity and temperature fluctuations cause condensation on exterior walls. The black spots behind the wardrobe are a classic sign of this type of moisture buildup.

For the current problem, the first step is to have the substance professionally tested to confirm it is mold and identify the species, as this dictates the remediation protocol. Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach, as this can aggravate spores and worsen air quality. A certified inspector will assess the extent of the growth, often using moisture meters to find the source of water intrusion—which is critical to preventing its return. The affected area and any contaminated materials will need to be properly contained and removed.

To prevent recurrence, you must address the moisture source. In Jumeirah, this is often condensation from the constant AC use creating a temperature differential with the humid outdoor air, or minor leaks. Moving the wardrobe a few inches away from the wall will significantly improve air circulation. Consider applying a anti-condensation coating to that wall, which acts as a thermal barrier. Ensure your AC unit is serviced regularly and that its drain lines are not clogged, as overflowing condensation pans are a frequent cause of hidden moisture.

For a long-term solution, maintaining indoor humidity levels below 60% is essential; using a dehumidifier in conjunction with your AC can be very effective, particularly during the more humid winter months.
