How to treat and prevent mold in Dubai humidity?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall has started getting these black speckles on my leather bags and shoes, and it's definitely mold. We had that really humid spell a few weeks back and I think that's when it started, even though the AC is always running. I'm really worried it's going to spread to my clothes and cause health issues. What's the most effective way to treat the mold already there and prevent it from coming back in our Dubai humidity?

First, remove all affected items from the closet. For leather goods, wipe them down with a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water; this kills surface mold without damaging the material. Let them dry completely in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight.

For the closet itself, scrub the walls and shelves with a mixture of detergent and water. Avoid using bleach, as it only removes the colour and doesn't kill the roots. After cleaning, wipe the surfaces with a diluted vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution to disinfect. Ensure everything is bone-dry before returning your items.

The root cause is likely a cold spot on that outside wall, where condensation forms despite the AC running. This is common in Dubai's climate where high outdoor humidity meets cold interior surfaces. To prevent recurrence, improve air circulation. Leave the closet doors open occasionally and consider using a small desiccant dehumidifier or moisture absorber inside it. Ensure your AC unit is serviced and its drain line is clear, as a clog can raise indoor humidity levels.

If the mold returns quickly or covers a large area (more than one square meter), a professional inspection is recommended to identify hidden moisture sources and the mold species. In many cases, the problem is linked to thermal bridging in the building envelope or an underperforming AC system, which requires specific diagnostics.
