How to treat and prevent mold in humid Dubai home?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Al Barsha for two years, and I just noticed a bunch of small black spots forming in the corner of our master bedroom closet, on the wall that faces the outside. It's been incredibly humid the last few weeks and the room always feels damp, even with the AC running constantly. What's the best way to treat this myself to stop it from spreading and how can I prevent it from coming back?

The black spots in your closet are likely a surface mold colony, common in Dubai's high humidity when condensation forms on cooler exterior walls. First, address the active growth with a solution of one part white vinegar to three parts water or a diluted bleach mix (1:10 with water). Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area thoroughly, let it dry completely, then wipe with a clean, dry cloth. Do not simply paint over it.

Preventing its return requires controlling the humidity source. That wall is likely a "cold bridge," where the outside heat meets your AC-cooled interior, causing condensation. Ensure your AC unit is serviced and draining properly, as a clogged drain line adds moisture to the air. Improve air circulation in the closet; leave doors ajar and consider a small renewable desiccant dehumidifier. For a permanent fix, a professional assessment can identify if inadequate insulation in that exterior wall is the root cause.

If the area is larger than one square meter, the mold returns quickly after cleaning, or you notice a persistent musty smell, a lab test is recommended to identify the species. This is particularly important if household members have respiratory sensitivities. Professional remediation may be necessary to properly address the underlying moisture issue and ensure complete spore removal.
