How to treat and prevent mold in Jumeirah villa bedroom?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has started to feel really damp, and we keep finding these black speckles along the bottom of the wardrobe that backs onto the exterior wall. We had a lot of condensation on the windows during the cooler mornings last month and I'm worried it's spreading. What's the most effective way to treat this existing mold and stop the moisture from coming back for good?

The black speckles are likely mold, a common issue in Jumeirah villas due to the high humidity and temperature differences that cause condensation on cooler surfaces like exterior walls. The first step is to address the moisture source, as treating the mold without doing this will only provide a temporary fix.
For the existing mold, a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 4 parts water) can be used to scrub the affected area on the wardrobe. Always wear gloves, a mask, and ensure good ventilation during cleaning. However, this is only for small, surface-level patches. Given the location on an exterior wall and the recurring dampness, the issue is likely persistent condensation or a minor water intrusion. To stop it from returning, improve ventilation in the room by running your AC consistently to control humidity, even during milder weather. Ensure furniture is not pressed tightly against the exterior wall to allow air circulation. Using a dehumidifier in the room, especially during more humid periods, can also help. For a permanent solution, a professional inspection is highly recommended. They can identify if there's a breach in the building envelope or insufficient insulation in that wall, which is a known issue with older villas. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to pinpoint the exact condensation points. In serious cases, remediation followed by lab testing is the only way to verify the spore count has returned to a safe level. |
