How to treat and prevent mold in kids' bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be mold in their bedroom. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black spots starting to form in the corner behind the wardrobe, which is on an interior wall. I’m worried it’s spreading because of the humidity. What’s the most effective way to treat this and prevent it from coming back for good?

The black spots behind the wardrobe are a classic sign of condensation mould, extremely common here due to our high humidity and constant AC use. The coughs could be related, as mould spores are a known respiratory irritant, especially for children.
First, address the immediate issue. Move the wardrobe away from the wall to allow air circulation. For a small patch, clean it with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mould cleaner, not bleach, as bleach only removes the colour and not the root structure. Wear an N95 mask and gloves during cleaning to avoid inhaling spores. Preventing its return is the critical part. Mould grows where humidity condenses on cold surfaces. That interior wall likely has a cold bridge, making it colder than the room's air and causing condensation. Improve air circulation around all furniture and against walls. Ensure your AC is set to a consistent, comfortable temperature, as constantly turning it on and off promotes condensation. A dehumidifier can help, but addressing the wall's surface temperature is more effective long-term. For a persistent or recurring problem, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the exact moisture source and assess the wall's condition. In some cases, applying a thermal insulating paint or coating to that specific wall can prevent the surface from getting cold enough for condensation to form. Since you've noticed it spreading, a lab test to identify the mould species can clarify the potential health risk and guide the most effective remediation strategy, particularly with children in the home. |
