How to treat and prevent mold in my bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in our villa in Al Barsha always feels a bit damp, especially on the wall facing the garden. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few small black speckles forming in the corner behind the wardrobe. With the humidity rising again, I’m worried it’s going to get much worse. What’s the most effective way to treat this small area and prevent it from spreading, without having to call in professional cleaners immediately?

Start by moving the wardrobe away from the wall to allow air circulation. For a small area, scrub the visible mold with a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 4 parts water), wearing an N95 mask and gloves. Dry the area thoroughly with a fan immediately after cleaning.
Preventing its return is the real challenge in Dubai's humidity. That wall likely has a temperature differential from the outdoor garden, causing condensation inside. Run a dehumidifier in the room, especially during the more humid months, to keep relative humidity below 60%. Ensure your AC is set to a consistently cool temperature and that its vents are not blocked, as this helps remove moisture from the air. Wiping down windows and cold surfaces in the morning can also reduce ambient moisture. If the speckles return quickly, penetrate the wall, or cover more than a square foot, the issue may be internal. In villas, a leak from the plumbing or roof is a common culprit that DIY cleaning cannot fix. At that point, a professional inspection with a moisture meter is needed to find the hidden source of water. Lab testing the mold type can also be prudent if occupants experience persistent respiratory issues. |
