How to treat and prevent mold in my Dubai closet?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a few black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on the interior wall. It’s been extra humid the last month and I'm worried it's spreading. What's the best way to treat this small area myself and what should I check to make sure it doesn't come back?

Good question. What you're describing is extremely common here in Dubai, especially after periods of high humidity like we've just had. That interior wall corner in a closet is a classic spot for condensation to form, leading to mold growth. Here's how to handle it.
For a small, isolated area (less than 1 square meter), you can attempt to treat it yourself. First, put on an N95 mask and gloves. Mix a solution of 1 part white vinegar to 3 parts water. DO NOT USE BLEACH. Bleach only removes the surface color and can actually feed the root structure deeper in the porous wall material. Scrub the area gently with a soft brush and your vinegar solution, then dry it thoroughly with a fan or a hairdryer on a cool setting. However, the treatment is pointless if you don't find the source. The humidity didn't cause the mold; it merely fueled it. The root cause is likely a lack of air circulation in that dark closet. Check if this wall is an exterior wall? Sometimes the insulation can be compromised. Also, ensure your AC is running efficiently and that the room is being properly dehumidified. Leave the closet doors ajar occasionally and consider a small renewable desiccant dehumidifier pouch inside. Given its a villa in Jumeirah, its crucial to ensure this isnt a sign of a bigger issue, like a hidden plumbing leak within the wall or a problem with your AC drain pan/condensate line. If the spots return after cleaning, if the area is larger than 1m2, or if you notice a musty odor, this absolutely requires a professional inspection. We use thermal imaging and moisture meters to find hidden moisture sources that DIY methods miss. Improper handling can spread spores and exacerbate the problem.
