How to treat and prevent mold in UAE closets?« Back to Previous Page

My master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has a persistent damp smell and I just found black spots on a couple of leather handbags I stored in there. It's been crazy humid lately and I'm worried the lack of air circulation is causing it. What's the most effective way to treat this existing mold and prevent it from coming back in our UAE closets?

Start by removing the affected items and cleaning the leather handbags with a specialist cleaner. For the closet itself, scrub the walls and surfaces with a solution of white vinegar or a diluted detergent. Wear an N95 mask and gloves during cleaning to avoid inhaling spores.

The root cause is high humidity and stagnant air, which is common in UAE closets, especially on interior walls without air circulation. To prevent recurrence, improve ventilation. Leave the closet doors ajar periodically and consider installing a small battery-operated dehumidifier or moisture absorber inside. Ensure your room's AC is running adequately, as consistent cooling also dehumidifies the air. In serious cases where the smell persists or visible growth is extensive, the wall itself may be damp. This requires a professional inspection to check for hidden condensation issues within the wall cavity or from AC ducting, which is a common problem in Dubai's climate. They can perform moisture mapping and air testing to identify the exact source.
