How to treat and prevent mold on bedroom ceiling?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots appearing along the corner where the wall meets the ceiling in our master bedroom. It's been really humid lately and I'm worried the AC might not be drying the air enough. What's the best way to get this properly cleaned and treated so it doesn't come back?

The black spots at the wall-ceiling junction are a classic sign of condensation, a very common issue in Dubai's humidity. The surface temperature difference where the wall meets the ceiling slab creates a "cold bridge," allowing moisture to condense and mould to grow, even with the AC running.

For cleaning, first identify the moisture source. It is often condensation, not a leak. Wipe the area with a diluted detergent solution (e.g., 1 part white vinegar to 4 parts water), but never use bleach as it only removes the colour and can push spores deeper into the porous surface. Wear an N95 mask and gloves during cleaning.

Preventing recurrence is the critical part. You must lower the room's humidity and address the thermal bridging. Ensure your AC is set to a consistent, cool temperature—around 22-24°C—to effectively dehumidify the air. Using ceiling fans to improve air circulation in the room can help prevent stagnant, humid pockets from forming. For a more permanent solution, consider having a professional apply an anti-condensation or thermal insulation paint to that specific corner to reduce the surface temperature difference.

For extensive or recurring growth, a professional inspection is recommended to verify the mould type with lab analysis and assess the building envelope. They can provide targeted remediation and insulation solutions that are specifically designed for the local climate to prevent this from becoming a persistent issue.
