How to treat and prevent mold on damp wall?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind our sofa in the Marina apartment has started to feel damp and I can see a few small black speckles of what I think is mold. We keep the AC on most of the time, but this is an exterior wall and I'm worried the recent humidity is seeping in. What's the best way to treat this ourselves and what kind of dehumidifier or product would you recommend to stop it from coming back?

That dampness and speckling on an exterior wall in Marina is a classic symptom of condensation due to the high outdoor humidity seeping through the concrete, meeting your cold AC air. First, wipe the area with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mould remover, wearing a mask and gloves. Never use bleach, as it only removes the colour and can push the spores deeper into the wall.

To prevent recurrence, you must manage the humidity at that cold surface. A desiccant dehumidifier is more effective than a refrigerant model in Dubai's climate, as it works better in the cooler temperatures of an AC-cooled room. Place it near the affected wall. Consistently keeping your AC on, even when out, helps maintain a stable temperature that reduces condensation. For a permanent solution, improving the wall's insulation or applying a thermal insulating paint can create a barrier against the outside heat and humidity.

In many cases, visible mould is just the surface indicator of a larger issue within the wall cavity. If the dampness persists or the mould returns quickly after cleaning, a professional inspection with a borescope is needed to assess the wall's internal condition and identify the exact moisture source. Persistent problems in building envelopes are common here and often require targeted remediation.
