How to treat and prevent mold on leather in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall of our villa in Jumeirah has started to get small black spots on the leather bags and shoes I stored there. It's been so humid lately, even with the AC running constantly. What's the best way to treat the items I have and prevent this from happening again next season?

The black spots are likely mold, caused by high humidity trapped against the cooler exterior wall of your villa. This is a common issue in Jumeirah, where sea air and condensation from year-round AC use create ideal conditions for mold growth.

For the affected leather items, take them outside to a shaded, dry area. Use a soft, dry cloth to gently brush off any loose spores. Then, wipe the surfaces with a cloth slightly dampened with a 50/50 solution of distilled water and 70% isopropyl alcohol, testing on a small, inconspicuous area first. Allow items to air dry completely away from direct sunlight, which can damage the leather. For valuable items, consult a professional leather restorer.

To prevent recurrence, you must address the closet's environment. Move all items out and inspect the wall and any built-in shelving for visible growth. Wipe down all interior surfaces with a microfiber cloth and a solution of diluted detergent or a dedicated mold-cleaning product. The root cause is likely insufficient air circulation and temperature differential. Leave the closet doors open periodically to allow conditioned air to circulate. Consider using a compact, electric dehumidifier or disposable moisture absorber (like silica gel packs) inside the closet. For a permanent solution, ensure your villa's AC system is properly serviced and that there are no gaps in the building's insulation on that external wall, a common source of condensation.

If the mold returns quickly or you see extensive growth on the walls themselves, a professional inspection with moisture mapping can identify hidden condensation issues that need remediation.
