How to treat and prevent small black mold in bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in the Jumeirah villa has felt really humid lately, and I've just spotted a few small black patches in the corner behind the wardrobe. It’s the wall that faces the sea, so maybe the humidity is worse there? What’s the best way to treat this small area and prevent it from spreading further without having to call in a professional team?

Small black patches in a sea-facing villa bedroom are a common issue in Dubai due to the high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. The wall behind the wardrobe is a cold spot where moisture condenses, creating the perfect environment for mold.

For a small area, you can treat it yourself with care. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar with four parts water, or use a diluted bleach solution (one cup bleach to one gallon of water). Scrub the area thoroughly, then dry it completely with a fan. Dispose of any rags used immediately.

Prevention is critical. Move the wardrobe at least two inches away from the wall to allow air circulation. Use a dehumidifier in the room, especially during the more humid months, to keep relative humidity below 60%. Wipe down condensation from windows and AC vents regularly. Ensure your AC unit is serviced and its drain lines are clear to prevent excess moisture.

If the mold returns quickly, covers an area larger than one square meter, or you notice a persistent musty odor, this indicates a deeper moisture issue within the wall. In such cases, a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging is needed to find the hidden source, as per DHA guidelines for villa habitability.
