How to treat and prevent wall mold in humid Dubai villa?« Back to Previous Page

Our bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has been feeling really humid, and I just pulled back the headboard to find these small black speckles on the wall behind it. We run the AC constantly, but the room never feels truly dry, especially with the recent humidity. What’s the most effective way to treat this and prevent it from spreading to other walls?

The black speckles behind your headboard are a classic sign of condensation-induced mould, extremely common in Dubai's humid climate. The wall behind furniture becomes a cold spot where moisture from the air condenses, creating a perfect breeding ground for mould, even with the AC running constantly.
For treatment, first move the headboard away from the wall to allow airflow. Wipe the affected area with a microfiber cloth and a solution of diluted white vinegar or a dedicated mould-cleaning product. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the colour and does not address the underlying spores. After cleaning, ensure the wall is completely dry. To prevent recurrence, you must manage the humidity and improve air circulation. Keep the AC running on "dry" or "dehumidify" mode, which is more effective at removing moisture than just cooling. Set the fan to "auto," not "on," to allow the unit to cycle properly and remove humidity. Consider using a standalone dehumidifier in the bedroom, especially during the more humid night hours. Reposition furniture at least two inches away from walls to prevent cold spots and allow air to circulate behind them. If the mould covers an area larger than one square meter, returns quickly after cleaning, or you notice a persistent musty smell, a professional inspection is recommended. They can use moisture meters to identify hidden dampness within the wall and perform air or swab sampling to identify the mould species, which is important for assessing potential health risks and ensuring the remediation protocol is correct. In many Dubai villas, the issue can be exacerbated by external wall leaks or insulation problems that require more targeted repairs. |
