How to treat black mold and report it in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind the shoe rack. It wasn't there during my last deep clean a few months ago, but with the recent humidity, it seems to have exploded. I’m worried it’s spreading because my husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose.
What’s the most effective way to treat this ourselves, and is this something we absolutely need to report to our building management in Dubai?

Black mold in a closet corner is a common issue in Dubai due to high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. For a small patch (under one square foot), you can treat it yourself safely.
Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix one part bleach with four parts water, or use a dedicated fungicidal cleaner. Scrub the area thoroughly, then dry it completely with a fan. Address the moisture source—this is often condensation from an AC vent or a leak. Ensure the closet is well-ventilated and consider using a moisture absorber. If the mold returns quickly, covers a larger area, or is inside the AC unit or walls, a professional inspection is needed to identify the full extent and source. Given your husband's symptoms, a lab test can identify the mold species to confirm if it's a type known to cause irritation. In Dubai, you are obligated to report suspected mold to building management if it is related to a building defect, such as a leak from another apartment, a faulty external seal, or a leaking central AC system. For mold clearly caused by internal condensation (like from your own AC unit), reporting is less urgent but still recommended to document the issue. They are responsible for fixing the root cause if it's a structural or common system problem. |
