How to treat black mold behind wardrobe permanently?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this during a deep clean, but the wall feels slightly damp. What’s the most effective way to treat this myself to stop it from coming back?

The black spots are likely Stachybotrys or Cladosporium mould, common in Dubai due to high humidity and condensation from AC use. The damp wall suggests a persistent moisture source, which must be addressed for any treatment to be permanent.

First, identify the moisture source. In many UAE buildings, this is condensation from an uninsulated external wall cooled by constant AC, or a minor pipe leak. Move the wardrobe and use a moisture meter to confirm the wall is dry; if it remains damp, the source is likely internal and requires professional diagnosis.

For small areas (under 1m²), clean with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mould remover. Never use bleach—it only removes the colour and can push spores deeper. Wear an N95 mask and gloves during cleaning. After cleaning, the wall must be completely dried with a dehumidifier or fan heater.

To prevent recurrence, improve air circulation behind the furniture. Leave a 2-3 inch gap between the wardrobe and wall. Consider applying an anti-mould primer before repainting. For persistent dampness, a professional inspection is recommended to identify if insulation or a dehumidifier is needed, as Dubai's climate makes this a recurring issue without addressing the root cause.

Given the symptoms and hidden nature of the growth, a professional assessment can confirm the mould type and ensure the remediation is effective for your family's health.
