How to treat black mold from AC leak myself?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be leaking a bit of water onto the carpet in our master bedroom closet, and after clearing it out today, I found black spots on the back wall and a few of our stored shoes. We're in a high-rise in JBR and I know the humidity doesn't help. What's the best way to treat this myself to stop it from spreading before I get maintenance to fix the AC unit?

Black mold from an AC leak requires immediate action to prevent its spread. Since you're in a high-rise in JBR, the high humidity will accelerate growth if the moisture isn't controlled.
First, address the source. You must put in a maintenance request to fix the AC condensate drain line leak; this is the primary cause. Until it's repaired, the mold will likely return. For your immediate DIY treatment, safety is critical. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection to avoid inhaling spores or getting them on your skin. Ventilate the area by opening a window if possible. For a small area on a wall, a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (one part bleach to ten parts water) can be effective. Apply it to the affected wall surface and scrub. Do not mix cleaning agents. For porous materials like the shoes and the carpet, cleaning may not be sufficient. Mold roots can penetrate deeply, and spores can remain. It is often recommended to discard heavily contaminated porous items to prevent ongoing issues. After cleaning, the area must be dried completely. Use dehumidifiers and fans aggressively, as Dubai's ambient humidity will hinder drying. Simply wiping the area is not enough. For any mold covering an area larger than one square meter, or if it returns after your cleaning attempt, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They can perform lab testing to identify the mold species and ensure remediation is complete, which is important for health, especially in a bedroom closet where spores can transfer to clothing. |
