How to treat black mold in a damp Dubai closet?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold I just found in the back of our bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa. It's on the wall facing the outside, and even though we run the AC constantly, the closet always feels a bit damp. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this after the recent humidity spike. What's the best way to treat this ourselves to stop it from spreading, and should we get a dehumidifier just for that room?

The dampness in your closet is likely due to condensation from the temperature difference between your cold AC room and the hot exterior wall, a common issue in Dubai villas. For a small patch of black mold, you can treat it yourself with a solution of one part white vinegar to three parts water; apply it with a spray bottle, let it sit for an hour, then scrub and dry the area completely. Never use bleach, as it only removes the surface color and can worsen indoor air quality.

Given the location on an exterior wall and persistent dampness, a dehumidifier for that room is a good interim solution to keep humidity below 50% and prevent immediate regrowth. However, this addresses the symptom, not the cause. The wall cavity itself may be compromised, requiring professional assessment to check for insulation issues or hidden water intrusion that DIY methods can't reach.

For health concerns like persistent coughing in children, a lab test to identify the mold species is recommended to understand the potential risk. In many cases, the visible mold is just the surface manifestation of a larger problem. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to diagnose the root cause behind the wall, which is crucial for a permanent solution.
