How to treat black mold in Al Barsha bathroom shower?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower has started turning black, and there's a weird fuzzy patch growing on the ceiling corner. We've lived in our villa in Al Barsha for 2 years and just noticed it getting worse this past week. I’m worried the humidity is making it spread. What’s the most effective way to treat this mold ourselves, and should I be calling our building maintenance for something like this?

Bathroom mold in Dubai villas is common due to high ambient humidity and condensation from hot showers. For the black grout, a paste of baking soda and white vinegar applied for 15 minutes before scrubbing can be effective for surface-level growth. For the fuzzy ceiling patch, a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 4 parts water) sprayed on, left for 10 minutes, then wiped clean can help. Always wear gloves, a mask, and ensure the room is well-ventilated during cleaning.

Since this is a villa, building maintenance typically handles external structures, not internal humidity issues. The root cause is likely inadequate ventilation. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and consider a dehumidifier if the problem persists. If the fuzzy growth returns quickly, spreads, or you notice a persistent musty smell, the moisture source may be internal (like a small leak in the ceiling) and a professional inspection is warranted to identify the species and the extent of the issue.
