How to treat black mold in bathroom and prevent spread?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold growing in the corner where the shower wall meets the ceiling in our Marina apartment. It’s been incredibly humid lately and I think the bathroom’s ventilation just isn't strong enough to handle it. What's the most effective way to treat this myself, and should I be worried about it spreading behind the walls?

Bathroom mold in Dubai is common due to the high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. For a small patch where the wall meets the ceiling, you can treat it yourself. Wear a mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a dedicated mold remover, a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 4 parts water), or undiluted white vinegar. Let the solution sit for 10-15 minutes before scrubbing and rinsing.

Prevention is critical. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and ensure it is actually moving air (hold a tissue up to it to check). Wipe down wet walls and surfaces with a squeegee after use. A dehumidifier can help significantly in apartments with persistent moisture. For painted surfaces, use a mold-inhibiting primer before repainting.

You should be concerned about spread behind walls if the mold patch is large (over one square meter), keeps returning quickly after cleaning, or if you notice a persistent musty odor or any wall softening, which indicates hidden moisture. In such cases, especially in a rental, professional inspection is advised to assess the wall cavity. Dubai Municipality standards hold property owners responsible for providing habitable conditions free from dampness and mold, and a verified lab test can document the issue for your landlord if remediation is needed.
