How to treat black mold in bedroom closet?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, right on the wall where our built-in wardrobes are. It wasn't there last month when I was putting away the winter clothes, but with all the humidity lately it's really spread. I'm worried it's getting into our clothes and the air conditioning. What's the most effective way to treat this ourselves, or should we just call a professional company right away?

Black mold in a bedroom closet is a common issue in Dubai due to the high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. The first step is to identify and address the moisture source. In closets against exterior walls, this is often condensation from the cold wall meeting warm, humid air. Check if your AC is set too cold, as this increases the temperature differential.
For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then disinfect with a solution of one part white vinegar to three parts water. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the color and doesn't kill the root structure. Dry the area thoroughly with a fan. However, if the mold has penetrated porous materials like drywall or the back of the wardrobe, or if it returns quickly after cleaning, the problem is beyond a surface fix. In these cases, a professional inspection is recommended to assess the extent of the growth, identify the exact moisture source, and provide a remediation plan. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find hidden dampness. For health safety and to prevent recurrence, a lab test to identify the mold species can be crucial, especially with black mold, as certain types can be more problematic. |
