how to treat black mold in closet and prevent moisture?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold forming in the corner of our master bedroom closet in Silicon Oasis. The wall feels a bit cold and damp, and it must have been growing slowly behind our storage boxes for a while. We run the AC constantly but it doesn't seem to help that specific spot. What's the best way to treat this safely and what can we do to stop the moisture from coming back in that corner?

The black mold in your closet is likely due to a cold spot on the wall where condensation forms, a common issue in Dubai's climate. The constant AC cools the wall, but humid air seeping in condenses on that cold surface, creating the dampness mold needs to grow.

For safe treatment, first address the moisture source. Move the boxes away to improve air circulation. Wipe the area with a diluted white vinegar solution (1 part vinegar to 1 part water) or a commercial mold remover, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. Do not bleach it, as this can sometimes exacerbate the problem on porous surfaces.

To prevent its return, you need to stop the condensation. This is often an insulation issue within the wall itself, especially in exterior corners. A professional inspection can identify if this is a construction flaw or a leak. They may use a thermal imaging camera to pinpoint the exact cold spot. The permanent fix usually involves addressing the thermal bridge, which might require a contractor to improve the wall's insulation.

For immediate improvement, use a portable dehumidifier in the room or a small, battery-operated moisture absorber in the closet itself. Ensure your AC unit is serviced and draining properly, as an overworked system can contribute to indoor humidity. If the mold covers more than one square meter, returns after cleaning, or you experience health symptoms, a certified mold inspection with lab analysis of the species is recommended to understand the scope and potential health risks.
