How to treat black mold in closet before it spreads?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Al Barsha for two years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, right where it meets the outer wall. It wasn't there last month when I did my seasonal cleaning, but with all the humidity lately, it seems to have exploded. I'm really worried it's spreading behind the wardrobe. What's the most effective way to treat this myself to stop it from getting worse before I call a professional?

First, move the wardrobe away from the wall to assess the full extent and allow air circulation. The mold's location on an outer wall is a classic sign of condensation due to the temperature difference between the air-conditioned room and the hot exterior—a very common issue in Dubai villas.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Do not simply wipe it, as this can aerosolize spores. Instead, lightly mist the area with water to suppress spores, then scrub with a dedicated mold removal cleaner or a solution of white vinegar or diluted bleach. Thoroughly dry the area afterwards with a fan. Dispose of any cleaning cloths immediately.

However, since you suspect it's spreading behind the wardrobe, this indicates a persistent moisture issue that cleaning alone won't fix. The wall itself may be damp. The most effective step is to identify and control the moisture source, which is often invisible. In many cases here, the problem is a small leak in the AC condensation drain line running inside the wall or insufficient insulation.

For a situation where mold reappears quickly or is suspected behind walls, a professional inspection is recommended to diagnose the hidden moisture source. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the exact cause without guesswork. In the UAE, remediation standards require containing the affected area to prevent cross-contamination, which a DIY approach cannot achieve.
