How to treat black mold in Dubai humid closet?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Jumeirah for 2 years and just noticed a cluster of dark, fuzzy black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet on the interior wall. It's been especially humid lately and the room always feels damp, so I’m worried it's spread further behind the wardrobe. What's the most effective way to treat this myself, or is it an immediate job for a professional cleaning company here in Dubai?

Black mold in a humid Dubai closet is often Stachybotrys or another dark species thriving on high humidity and cellulose materials like drywall or wood. The UAE's climate, with high outdoor humidity and year-round AC use, creates perfect conditions for condensation on cooler interior walls, especially behind furniture blocking airflow.

For a small, visible patch under one square meter, you can attempt treatment yourself. First, wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses to avoid inhaling spores or skin contact. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water or a diluted bleach solution (1:10 with water) in a spray bottle. Lightly mist the area, let it sit for 15 minutes, then scrub with a stiff brush. Wipe clean with a damp cloth and ensure the area is thoroughly dried with a fan. Dispose of all cleaning materials.

However, given the mold is on an interior wall and you suspect hidden growth behind the wardrobe, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. In villas, moisture can wick up from the slab foundation or penetrate from exterior walls, leading to extensive hidden colonization that DIY cleaning cannot address. Professionals use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the wall cavity's condition without unnecessary demolition.

The most critical step is identifying and correcting the moisture source. This is often poor ventilation, a leaking AC condensate drain line, or thermal bridging causing condensation. Simply cleaning the mold without solving the humidity problem will result in its rapid return. For persistent dampness, consider using a portable dehumidifier in the room.

For verifiable remediation, companies with their own microbiology lab can provide pre- and post-testing to confirm the species and ensure the treatment was effective, not just superficial.
