How to treat black mold in Dubai rental closet?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and it feels slightly damp. With the humidity lately, I'm worried it's spreading. What's the best way to treat this myself, and should I be reporting this to my landlord in Dubai?

That damp patch with black mold in your closet is a classic Dubai issue, caused by the high humidity condensing on cooler exterior walls. You'll need to address both the moisture and the mold.
First, report this to your landlord or property management company immediately. Under Dubai's rental regulations (RERA), the landlord is typically responsible for fixing the source of the moisture, which is likely an insulation or sealing issue in the external wall. Do not attempt a major repair yourself, as that could alter the property. For a small patch, you can clean it yourself while waiting for the landlord's response. Wear a mask and gloves. A solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) can be effective. Scrub the area thoroughly and allow it to dry completely. However, this only removes the visible growth, not the root cause. Crucially, control the humidity. Keep the closet doors open to improve air circulation. Ensure your AC is running efficiently, as it is your primary dehumidifier. A standalone dehumidifier can also help significantly in enclosed spaces. If the mold returns quickly, covers more than one square meter, or you notice a persistent musty smell, this indicates a deeper problem. At that point, a professional inspection is advised to identify the exact moisture source and extent of growth, as mold can spread inside wall cavities. |
