How to treat black mold in Dubai villa and prevent recurrence?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for two years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, on the wall facing the outside. It’s been incredibly humid the last few weeks and I'm worried it's spreading behind the clothes. What's the best way to treat this ourselves to stop it from coming back, and should we be looking for a specific underlying cause like a leak?

The black mold in your closet corner is a classic Dubai humidity issue, likely from condensation where the cold interior wall meets the humid outdoor air. This thermal bridging effect is common in villas here. The recent high humidity has provided the perfect conditions for it to bloom.
For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can treat it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Clean the area with a microfiber cloth and a solution of detergent and water. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the color and does not kill the root structure. After cleaning, wipe the area with a diluted white vinegar solution. Let the wall dry completely. For porous surfaces like drywall, the mold may have penetrated; sanding may be necessary after the area is dry. To prevent recurrence, you must control the humidity. Increase air circulation in the closet; leave the door ajar and consider a small desiccant dehumidifier inside. Ensure your AC is running efficiently and that the room is kept at a consistent, cool temperature to reduce condensation on that external wall. Check that the closet isn't overstuffed, as packed clothes restrict airflow and trap moisture. The underlying cause is almost certainly the temperature differential and humidity, but you must rule out a leak. Inspect the exterior wall and roof above for any cracks or points of water ingress, especially after the recent rains. If the mold returns after cleaning and improving ventilation, or if you discover staining on the back of the clothes, the growth is likely more extensive behind the wall. At that point, a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging is needed to assess the full scope and identify the exact moisture source before any remediation can be permanently successful. |
