How to treat black mold in humid UAE villa?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa in Jumeirah has this weird black speckle pattern growing on the back of our bedroom wardrobe, which is on an interior wall. We run the AC constantly but it’s been so humid the last few weeks that everything just feels damp. What’s the best way to treat this and are there any specific dehumidifiers or moisture absorbers that actually work in the UAE climate to stop it from coming back?

Black mould on interior walls in a UAE villa is a direct result of high humidity condensing on cold surfaces, typically from constant AC use creating a temperature differential. The first step is to identify and address the moisture source, which is often condensation rather than a leak in your specific scenario.

For a small, isolated area, a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 4 parts water) can be used to clean the surface. Wear an N95 mask and gloves during cleaning to avoid spore inhalation. However, this only addresses the visible growth, not the underlying humidity problem.

To prevent recurrence, you must lower the indoor relative humidity. Desiccant-based moisture absorbers are largely ineffective for an entire villa room in the Dubai climate. A properly sized compressor-based dehumidifier is necessary to maintain humidity below 60%, the threshold where mould growth is significantly inhibited. Ensure your AC unit is not set too cold, as this increases condensation; a setting of 22-24°C is often more effective for humidity control.

For a recurring issue on an interior wall, the mould may have penetrated the drywall or be growing within the wardrobe's structure. In such cases, professional assessment is advised to determine the full extent. A science-driven inspection, including moisture mapping and possibly air or surface sampling, can identify the precise conditions allowing the growth and verify the success of any remediation. This is a common challenge in villas here, and effective treatment requires tackling both the visible mould and the ambient moisture that fuels it.
