How to treat black mold in shower corner?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold growing in the corner where the shower wall meets the ceiling in our Marina apartment. It’s been really humid lately and the bathroom's ventilation isn't great. What’s the most effective way to treat this myself, and should I be worried about it spreading behind the tiles?

Black mold in shower corners is common in Dubai due to the high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. For a small patch (under one square foot), you can treat it yourself safely.

Wear a mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a dedicated mold remover spray or a solution of white vinegar or diluted bleach. Dry the area thoroughly with a fan after treatment. The key to preventing its return is controlling moisture. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and wipe down wet walls. A small dehumidifier can help significantly in apartments with poor ventilation.

You should be concerned about it spreading behind tiles if the grout is cracked or the sealant is failing, as moisture can seep through. Inspect the grout and silicone sealant around the shower. If it's brittle, discolored, or has gaps, moisture has likely penetrated behind. In such cases, the mold behind the surface could be extensive, and scrubbing the visible patch will only be a temporary fix.

For recurring mold despite cleaning, or if you suspect damage behind the tiles, a professional inspection with moisture meters and borescopes is recommended to assess the full extent.
