How to treat black mold in UAE villa closet?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Jumeirah for two years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, right on the wall. It’s been really humid lately and I'm worried it's spreading from the outside wall. What's the best way to treat this ourselves to stop it from coming back, and should we be looking for a specific type of anti-mold paint for the walls here in the UAE?

Black mold in a closet, especially on an exterior wall in Jumeirah, is a common issue here due to the high humidity and condensation. The first step is to address the moisture source, as simply cleaning it won't prevent recurrence.

For a small patch, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Clean the area with a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 4 parts water), but ensure the room is well-ventilated. After cleaning, let the wall dry completely using a fan or dehumidifier. The wall must be bone dry before any repainting.

Anti-mold paints are effective, but their success depends entirely on proper surface preparation. Look for paints labeled as "mildew-resistant" or containing fungicides; these are widely available at major hardware stores in the UAE. They are designed for our climate but are not a substitute for solving the dampness.

Given its location on an exterior wall, this mold is likely due to a thermal bridge causing condensation or even minor water intrusion. This is a structural issue, not just a surface one. DIY methods are a temporary fix. A professional inspection can identify the exact moisture source—be it inadequate insulation, a leaking pipe, or rising damp—using tools like thermal imaging and moisture meters. They can then recommend a permanent remediation strategy to stop it from coming back.
