How to treat black mold on apartment wall ourselves?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind our sofa in the living room of our Jumeirah apartment has started showing these black splotches. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably because we moved the furniture for cleaning. It’s been more humid than usual lately and I'm worried it's spreading. What’s the best way to treat this ourselves before we have to call a professional?

Black splotches on an interior wall in a humid climate like Dubai are often a surface mold caused by condensation. The wall behind furniture is a classic spot for it, as airflow is restricted and the cool wall from the AC meeting warm, moist air creates a perfect breeding ground.

For a small area (under one square meter), you can attempt to clean it yourself. First, put on an N95 mask and gloves to avoid inhaling spores or skin contact. Move the sofa away to allow maximum airflow. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water or a diluted detergent. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the color and can push the mold deeper into porous surfaces like drywall. Scrub the area gently with a soft brush, then wipe it down with a clean, damp cloth and dry it thoroughly.

Crucially, you must address the moisture source. This is almost always condensation from the temperature differential. After cleaning, improve air circulation around the area. Consider using a dehumidifier in the room, especially during the more humid summer and winter months. If the mold returns quickly, appears furry, or the wall feels soft or damp, stop. The issue may be a hidden leak within the wall or the building's structure, which is common in older Jumeirah buildings and requires a professional assessment to find the true source. For any persistent or recurring mold, a lab test is the only way to identify the species and confirm it is not a more problematic type.
