How to treat black mold on ceiling corner safely?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black speckles appearing along the corner where the bedroom wall meets the ceiling. It's an interior room in our Jumeirah villa and I'm worried it's from all the humidity we've had lately, even with the AC running. What's the best way to get this properly treated without damaging the paint?

That black speckling in the corner is a common issue in Dubai villas, and you're right to suspect humidity. Even with AC running, interior corners can be cold spots where condensation forms, creating a perfect environment for mould growth on the dust and organic matter in the paint.

For a small patch, you can address it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Do not just wipe it, as this can spread spores. Instead, lightly mist the area with a diluted white vinegar solution (1 part vinegar to 1 part water) to dampen the mould and prevent spores from becoming airborne. Gently scrub with a soft brush, then wipe clean with a damp cloth. Ensure the area is thoroughly dried afterwards with a fan. Repainting over it without killing the mould first will just see it return.

The critical step is identifying and stopping the moisture source. In your interior room, the most likely cause is condensation due to the temperature difference between the cool wall and the humid Dubai air. Improving air circulation in that corner with a small fan can help. Also, check that your AC is not set too cold, as a very low temperature increases condensation potential.

For a recurring or larger problem (over roughly one square foot), or if the mould returns quickly, a professional inspection is recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to pinpoint the exact condensation source hidden within the wall or ceiling void. In many cases, the treatment requires applying a specialised antimicrobial coating after cleaning to prevent regrowth, followed by repainting with mould-resistant paint. A proper remediation will address the root cause to provide a long-term solution.
