How to treat black mold on damp bedroom wall?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe, which we finally moved today. It’s on the wall facing the outside and it feels slightly damp. What's the best way to treat this ourselves, and should we be worried about it being a bigger problem inside the walls?

The damp wall and black mold indicate a moisture issue, which is very common in Dubai due to high humidity and constant AC use causing condensation. The first step is to identify and stop the water source. Since it's an exterior wall, check for cracks in the building facade or failed sealant around windows allowing moisture ingress. It could also be internal condensation from the temperature difference between the cold AC and humid outdoor air.
For a small patch (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water. Avoid bleach, as it doesn't prevent regrowth and can damage porous surfaces. After cleaning, ensure the area is completely dry. A dehumidifier can help. Then, monitor it closely for any return. You should be concerned about a bigger problem inside the walls. The visible patch is often just the tip of the iceberg. Persistent dampness inside the wall cavity can lead to extensive mold growth on the back of drywall and structural elements, which you cannot see. Given the climate, this problem will almost certainly recur until the core moisture issue is professionally diagnosed and resolved. For a situation like this, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to assess the wall's saturation level and the extent of hidden mold without destructive testing. This is the only way to know if the problem is superficial or requires remediation from the inside out. Verifiable data from this assessment will determine the correct course of action. |
