How to treat black mold on exterior wall permanently?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an exterior wall facing the marina. It seems worse since the recent humidity spike, and I'm worried it's spreading behind our stored clothes. What's the most effective way to treat this ourselves to stop it from coming back, and should we be concerned about it being inside the wall itself?

Black mold on an exterior wall facing the marina is a common issue here, directly linked to our high humidity and condensation. The wall likely gets cold from AC, and humid outdoor air condenses on it, creating a perfect environment for mold. The recent humidity spike would absolutely make it more active and visible.
For a small patch, you can treat it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, or a dedicated mold remover. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the surface color and doesn't kill the roots. After cleaning, let the area dry completely, then consider applying a mold-inhibiting primer before repainting. However, if the mold returns quickly or the patch is larger than one square meter, the moisture source is likely inside the wall cavity itself. Given its location on an exterior wall and the persistent humidity, it's very possible there is a hidden condensation issue or a minor leak behind the drywall. This is a serious case where professional inspection is warranted. They use moisture meters and borescopes to check inside walls, which is the only way to know the true extent. The most effective way to stop it from coming back is to control the humidity and prevent condensation. Ensure your AC is running consistently to dehumidify the room, and use a standalone dehumidifier in the closet if necessary. Improve air circulation by not overpacking the closet and leaving a small gap between the wall and your stored items. For a permanent fix, the underlying moisture problem must be identified and resolved; otherwise, any cleaning will only be temporary. |
