How to treat closet mold and find the moisture source?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for two years and just noticed some black spots forming in the corner of our master bedroom closet, right on the wall. The weird thing is, it's on an interior wall, not an exterior one, so I'm confused about where the moisture is coming from. I'm worried it's going to spread to our clothes.
What's the best way to treat this myself to stop it from spreading, and how can I figure out the source of the dampness to prevent it from coming back?

Good question. This is a common issue we see in Dubai villas, especially in areas like Jumeirah. The presence of mold on an interior wall is a definitive sign of a moisture issue that needs to be addressed at its source.
First, do not attempt a full remediation yourself. Disturbing the mold without proper containment can cause spores to spread throughout your bedroom and HVAC system. For immediate containment, you can carefully wipe the visible surface with a cloth dampened with a diluted detergent solution. Do not use bleach, as it does not kill the mold roots and can exacerbate the problem. This is only a temporary measure to prevent further visible spread. The moisture source is the critical part. In an interior closet, the most likely culprits are: 1. Condensation: Dubai's high external humidity meets your home's cold AC, creating condensation. This is amplified in closets on exterior walls or in rooms with poor air circulation. The cold wall behind the closet is a prime condensation point. 2. Concealed Plumbing Leak: A small leak from a pipe within the wall or from an adjacent bathroom is a very strong possibility and requires immediate professional investigation. 3. Capillary Rise: Although less common in modern villas, moisture can wick up from the foundation through the concrete. To find the source, you need professional-grade tools. Our inspectors use thermal imaging cameras to identify temperature differentials indicating dampness and moisture meters to quantify the moisture content within the wall itself. This non-invasive testing is essential to pinpoint the exact cause without destructive investigation. Given the climate and potential for hidden damage, a DIY approach is not advised. The remediation process for a situation like this involves setting up containment with negative air pressure, using HEPA filtration scrubbers, and applying professional-grade antimicrobial agents to ensure the mold is eradicated, not just superficially cleaned. I strongly recommend a professional inspection to correctly diagnose the moisture source and safely remediate the mold.
