How to treat closet mold and prevent humidity in Mirdif?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has a faint damp smell that gets worse when the AC is off. I pulled everything out and found a small patch of black speckles in the corner where the wall meets the ceiling. It’s our first winter in this villa in Mirdif and I’m worried the humidity from the recent foggy mornings is causing this. What’s the best way to treat this small area and what kind of dehumidifier or moisture absorber should I put in the closet to stop it from coming back?

The black speckles are likely mould caused by condensation, a common issue in Mirdif villas during winter's high humidity and foggy mornings. The damp smell worsening when the AC is off confirms the space isn't staying dry.

For the small patch, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Wipe the area with a microfiber cloth dampened with a diluted white vinegar or detergent solution—do not spray, as that aerosolizes spores. Discard the cloth immediately in a sealed bag. This is only suitable for a surface area smaller than one square foot. Painting over it will not solve the underlying moisture problem.

Prevention requires addressing the humidity. A small, electric desiccant dehumidifier is more effective for enclosed spaces like closets than moisture-absorbing crystals, which are insufficient for Dubai's climate. The real solution is improving air circulation. Leave the closet door ajar and ensure the room's AC is running consistently, as it dehumidifies. Check that the vent is not blocked and is blowing air into the room.

This could also indicate a minor insulation issue in the exterior wall. For a lasting fix or if the mould returns, a professional inspection can identify the condensation source. Companies with a microbiology lab can verify the mould type and provide a targeted remediation plan.
