How to treat closet mold and prevent spreading?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa has started to get a faint damp smell, and I just found a few small black spots on a leather handbag I stored in the back. We run the AC constantly, but with the recent humidity, I'm worried it's not enough. What's the best way to treat this small area and what can I do to stop it from spreading to my clothes?

The black spots on your leather bag are a clear sign of mold growth, which is common in Dubai's high humidity, especially in enclosed spaces like closets that share a wall with a bathroom or the outside. The constant AC can create a significant temperature differential, leading to condensation in these less-ventilated areas.

For this small area, first remove the affected bag and any other items from the closet. Wipe down all interior surfaces with a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 4 parts water), but test it on an inconspicuous area first as bleach can damage some surfaces. Ensure the closet is completely dry before returning any items. For porous materials like drywall or wood where the mold has penetrated, cutting out and replacing the affected section may be necessary.

To prevent it from spreading and recurring, address the humidity source. Leave the closet doors open for periods each day to improve air circulation. Consider using a small renewable desiccant dehumidifier inside the closet. Ensure your villa's AC unit is serviced and draining properly, as a clogged drain line can contribute to indoor humidity. For villas, maintaining a relative humidity level below 60% is the key to prevention.

If the smell persists after cleaning or you see the mold return quickly, the issue may be more extensive behind the walls. In such cases, a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging can identify hidden condensation points or leaks that are not visible. They can also take samples for lab analysis to confirm the mold type, which dictates the appropriate remediation protocol.
