How to treat closet mold in humid Dubai climate?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa has started to feel damp, and I just found a few small black spots on a couple of leather handbags I stored there. We run the AC constantly, but with the recent humidity, I'm worried it's mold and it's going to spread to my clothes. What's the best way to treat this immediately and what dehumidifier or moisture absorber would you recommend specifically for a walk-in closet in this climate?

First, remove the affected items from the closet immediately. For the leather handbags, wipe them down with a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water, then let them air dry completely away from the closet. This can address surface mold on non-porous materials.
For the closet itself, identify and address the moisture source. In a Jumeirah villa, this is often condensation from the AC ductwork or a nearby external wall. Wipe all hard surfaces with the same vinegar solution or a dedicated mold-cleaning product. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the colour and does not address the root cause. Ensure the closet is completely dry before returning any items. To manage humidity, a compact desiccant dehumidifier is more effective than a refrigerant model in Dubai's climate, as it performs better in the typically cooler AC environment of a closet. Look for a unit with a capacity suitable for a small room. Silica gel moisture absorbers can also help maintain lower humidity levels passively. Given the constant AC use and high external humidity, this is likely a recurring issue. If the mold returns quickly or covers more than a small area (about one square meter), a professional inspection is recommended to identify hidden moisture sources within walls or the AC system, which is a common issue here. They can perform air and surface sampling to identify the mold type and concentration, which dictates the proper remediation protocol. |
