How to treat closet mold in UAE humidity and prevent it?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall of my Jumeirah villa has started to smell really damp, and I just pulled out a winter jacket to find black spots all over it. This must have happened since the humidity spiked last week. What’s the most effective way to treat this and stop it from coming back, considering our UAE weather?

What you're describing is a classic case of a localized mold bloom, extremely common here in Jumeirah and across the UAE with our high ambient humidity, especially when it condenses on cooler exterior walls. That damp smell and black spotting are clear indicators.

First, for immediate treatment: Isolate the affected items. The jacket likely needs professional cleaning or may be unsalvageable. For the closet itself, a solution of diluted white vinegar (a natural fungicide) or a proprietary mold-cleaning product can be used on the surfaces. However, this is just a surface fix. You MUST identify and address the moisture source. Given it's an exterior wall, the issue is likely condensation due to the temperature differential between the air-conditioned interior and the hot, humid exterior. This creates a perfect breeding ground.

To prevent recurrence, you need to manage the closet's microenvironment. Firstly, ensure air circulation. Leave the closet doors ajar periodically and consider a small battery-operated dehumidifier or moisture absorber like those from DampRid placed inside. Never store damp or even slightly moist clothing. Secondly, inspect the exterior wall for any cracks or compromised seals that might be allowing humid air infiltration. The long-term, most effective solution is often improving the room's overall ventilation and potentially adding insulation to that specific wall to prevent condensation, a process that requires a professional assessment.

For a problem of this nature, a professional inspection is highly recommended. We use thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint exactly where the condensation is occurring and hygrometers to measure the humidity level within the wall cavity. This ensures the remediation is targeted and effective, not just a temporary wipe-down.

If the mold is extensive or you want to ensure it's eradicated properly and the root cause fixed, please give our team a call at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a comprehensive assessment.
