How to treat damp black mold behind furniture permanently?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably because we never move that heavy furniture. The wall feels slightly damp to the touch, and it’s an interior wall facing the rest of the villa. What’s the best way to treat this myself to make sure it doesn’t come back after I clean it?

Black mold behind furniture is common here due to our high humidity and condensation on cooler interior walls. The damp wall suggests a persistent moisture source, likely from condensation buildup or a minor, hidden plumbing leak in that wall.
For a small area, start by moving the wardrobe away from the wall to allow air circulation. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the visible mold with a mixture of detergent and water; avoid bleach as it doesn't prevent regrowth. Dry the wall completely with a fan. The key is eliminating the moisture. Use a dehumidifier in the room and ensure your AC is set to a consistent, cool temperature to reduce condensation. Keep furniture at least a few inches from walls to promote airflow. However, if the wall feels damp and the mold returns quickly, the moisture issue is likely behind the wall itself. In Dubai's villas, this can stem from internal condensation within AC ductwork running in the voids or from a small leak. DIY cleaning only addresses surface mold, not the root cause. For a recurring or dampness-related problem, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the hidden moisture source. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the origin. Permanent remediation requires fixing that leak or insulation issue first, then treating the affected area with antimicrobial solutions. Without addressing the source, the mold will almost certainly return. |
