How to treat damp black mold behind furniture?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be from the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed this, probably because we finally moved the heavy furniture during our deep clean last weekend. The wall feels a bit damp to the touch. What’s the best way to treat this ourselves to make sure it doesn’t come back after we clean it?

Black mold behind furniture is common in Dubai due to high humidity and condensation from AC units cooling warm, humid air. The damp wall suggests a moisture issue that must be addressed first, or the mold will return.
For a small area, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the spot with a mixture of detergent and water, or a solution of white vinegar. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the color and doesn't kill the roots. Dry the area completely with a fan immediately after cleaning. However, cleaning the surface is a temporary fix. The critical step is identifying and stopping the moisture source. In a Jumeirah villa, this is often condensation from an AC duct in the wall or ceiling, a small plumbing leak, or moisture wicking from the ground. The wall must be fully dry behind the surface, which can take days with a dehumidifier. Given the symptoms and the dampness, a professional inspection is wise. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the hidden source of water that you can't see. For health safety, especially with children coughing, a lab test can confirm if it's Stachybotrys (toxic black mold) or a less harmful species like Cladosporium. Many companies, including those with their own microbiology labs, can provide this identification to guide the appropriate remediation response. |
