How to treat damp wall to prevent mold on leather?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the inside wall has started getting these black spots on the leather bags and shoes I stored there. I noticed it a couple of weeks ago when the humidity really kicked in. I’m in a Jumeirah Village Circle villa and that wall faces the direction we get the most dampness. What’s the best way to treat the wall itself to stop this from coming back every season?

The black spots are likely mold growth, a common issue in JVC villas due to high humidity and condensation on cooler external walls. First, address the source of moisture. That wall likely has a temperature differential causing condensation when the AC is running. For the wall itself, a thorough cleaning with a diluted white vinegar or a specialized mold-cleaning solution is the initial step. Dry the area completely immediately after cleaning.
To prevent recurrence, you must lower the humidity and insulate the wall. A dehumidifier inside the closet or a room-sized unit is highly effective in Dubai's climate. Ensure the closet door is left ajar to allow air circulation from the AC. For a more permanent solution, the wall may require professional assessment for insulation or a vapor barrier to break the thermal bridge causing the condensation. For leather items, carefully wipe them with a soft cloth dampened with a 50/50 water and rubbing alcohol solution, then allow them to dry fully away from the damp area before storing again. If the mold growth is extensive or has penetrated porous materials, a professional inspection is recommended to assess the wall's condition and provide a targeted remediation plan to protect your property and health. |
