How to treat mold and choose a dehumidifier?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from mold in our villa in Jumeirah. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black spots growing behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom, which feels damp to the touch. I'm worried it's spreading because of the humidity. What's the most effective way to treat this ourselves and what kind of dehumidifier should I get to stop it from coming back?

The damp spot behind your wardrobe is a classic sign of condensation mould, very common in Dubai villas due to high humidity and cool AC walls. For a patch that size, you can treat it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix one part bleach with four parts water, scrub the area thoroughly, and let it dry completely. Dispose of any contaminated materials like cardboard boxes. However, since your children are coughing, this visible patch may be part of a larger issue inside the wall or HVAC system; professional inspection is strongly advised to identify all sources and assess airborne spore levels.

For a dehumidifier, choose a unit with a capacity rated for at least the square footage of your master bedroom. Look for a model with a built-in hygrometer that allows you to set a specific humidity level—aim for maintaining 50-55% relative humidity, which is the recommended range to inhibit mould growth. Given Dubai's climate, a unit with a continuous drain option is highly practical, as the collection tank will fill quickly. Place it in the room's centre, away from walls and furniture, for optimal air circulation.

Addressing the root cause is crucial. Ensure your AC unit is serviced and draining properly, as a clogged drain line adds significant moisture to your indoor air. Improve ventilation by occasionally opening windows when outdoor humidity is lower, typically during the mid-day in winter or on a breezy day. For persistent problems, a professional assessment can identify hidden moisture sources and the full extent of contamination.
