How to treat mold behind furniture in humid climate?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, fuzzy spots spreading along the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah. It's been incredibly humid lately and the room never gets any direct sunlight. What's the best way to get this professionally treated without having to throw out all our furniture?

Move the wardrobe away from the wall immediately to allow air circulation. Do not attempt to scrub it yourself, as this can aerosolize spores and spread them throughout your home.

In Dubai's climate, this is a common issue caused by a combination of high humidity and condensation from AC units creating a cold surface on exterior walls. The wall behind the wardrobe stays cold and damp with no airflow, creating a perfect environment for mold. The first step is a professional inspection to identify the mold species and, crucially, the moisture source. Remediation involves containing the area with physical barriers, using HEPA-filtered air scrubbers to clean the air, and safely removing the contaminated material. All surfaces are then treated with antimicrobial solutions.

Your furniture may not need to be discarded. Items can often be professionally cleaned and sanitized off-site if the contamination is not severe. To prevent recurrence, keep furniture at least a few inches from exterior walls to promote airflow. Using a dehumidifier in the room, especially during the more humid months, can help reduce the moisture levels that allow mold to grow.
