How to treat mold behind wardrobe in Jumeirah?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah Village Circle. It's been really humid lately and I'm worried it's mold, especially since my husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose. What's the best way to get this properly treated without ruining the wall?

The black spots behind your wardrobe in JVC are almost certainly mold, a very common issue here due to our high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. Your husband's stuffy nose is a classic symptom of mold exposure.

First, do not attempt to simply wipe it with bleach. This can disturb spores and spread them, and it won't address the root cause. Move the wardrobe away from the wall to allow for air circulation and a full assessment.

For a small, surface-level patch, you can carefully clean it yourself with a vinegar or a diluted hydrogen peroxide solution, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, since it's spreading and already affecting health, this is likely a more serious case that has penetrated the plasterboard. In such instances, professional assessment is strongly recommended to determine the extent of the damage and the correct remediation protocol.

A proper remediation process involves isolating the area to prevent cross-contamination, safely removing the affected porous materials like plasterboard, HEPA vacuuming all surfaces, and applying EPA-approved antimicrobial treatments. Crucially, they will identify and rectify the moisture source—often it's condensation from an AC unit, a leak in the wall, or lack of ventilation behind the furniture.

After remediation, repainting with a mold-inhibiting primer is essential. To prevent recurrence, maintain indoor humidity below 60% with a dehumidifier, ensure your AC is serviced and draining correctly, and leave a small gap between large furniture and exterior walls to allow air to circulate.
